Green eradication road: Lands encroached at gunpoint

DMK former MLA Parthiban said that the lands was encroached by intimidating the public at the gun point, for the green eradication road (green corridor) project.

Under Bharatmala Pariyojana Scheme, the Central Government is planning to set up a green eradication road between Chennai and Salem at a cost of Rs 10,000 crore. The project length is 277.3 kilometers. It is said that the only reason for the project is to cut down the distance. Lands are being encroached in five districts - Salem, Dharmapuri, Kanchipuram, Krishnagiri and Thiruvannamalai, for the project. Agricultural lands, forests, schools and mountains are to be destroyed. The masses are protesting against the proposal of road that lives on farm lands.

People are pleading not to survey their lands, to the officials who come for survey. Some are also involved in suicide attempts. However, with the help of police, Revenue Department Officials are being deployed in land encroachment activities.

In this case, the former MLA and present DMK’s State Electoral Work Committee Secretary, Parthiban said, "The livelihood of the farmers is completely deteriorated by this 8-way road project. Without consulting the farmers and without any prior notice, people who came to power with the votes of farmers encroach their lands at the gun point through its police force. This resembles the colonial rule of British East India Company who entered India with the gunpoint.”

"It is highly pathetic to see the encroachment of poor farmer’s lands.More than a million people will be affected by this project. My 2 acres of stone quarry will also be affected. Following the survey, land plot was also done in Salem’s Jarugumalai hill station, yesterday June 22 " said Selvam yesterday (June 22), measuring 8 km of road and measuring in Jarugumalai forest area. Thousands of trees will be affected by this,” said he.-
